AMEDEO F. FERRARO
Partner
Amedeo F. Ferraro is a founding partner of Martin & Ferraro. He has 24 years of experience practicing patent law. Amedeo’s practice focuses on the development and prosecution of patent portfolios and subsequent defense of those patents in post-grant review and reexamination proceedings. He provides patent prosecution services to large publicly traded companies as well as many small and mid-sized companies that do not have in-house counsel dedicated to patent prosecution. Amedeo has extensive experience in managing high-value patent portfolios and understands how to navigate the complexities of such portfolios in order to be cost effective and to achieve monetization goals.
Amedeo and his partner, Thomas H. Martin, were the lead architects in preparing and prosecuting medical devise patents Dr. Gary K. Michelson. This patent portfolio of approximately 1,000 patents issued worldwide was subsequently acquired by Medtronic for $1.35 billion.
Patent infringement litigations involving patents prepared and prosecuted by Amedeo and Tom have resulted in over $300 million dollars in judgments and settlements.
Amedeo has a wide range of experience in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications in the area of the spine, including significant experience in preparing and prosecuting many foundational patents.
Trained as a patent litigator for the first seven years of his career, Amedeo is skilled in obtaining valid and enforceable patents capable of withstanding challenges in the courts and patent office. His clients’ patents are enforced in litigations in the U.S., Japan, Europe, and other countries. In support of an effective litigation effort, he works closely with respected litigation firms domestically and internationally. Amedeo coordinates and directs outbound and inbound international patent filings through a network of like-minded foreign associates who work with Martin & Ferraro on a regular basis.
Amedeo is a registered patent attorney with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office and is licensed to practice in California where he oversees the firm’s offices in Los Angeles. He brings a wide range of experience to the firm, including counseling clients on all aspects of patent protection. Amedeo has served as lead counsel in various inter partes review and covered business method proceedings.
Amedeo provides a variety of other services including patent license agreement and patent sale agreement preparation and negotiation; patent portfolio development and management; assisting clients designing around competitors’ patents and patent portfolios; and opinion preparation.
In addition to medical technology, Amedeo’s expertise includes years of technical experience in the wireless telecommunications network systems; broadband and internet-based technologies including social media, IP protocol, web email, VOIP, and video on demand delivery services and systems; packaging and container industrial systems; software and applications; and electro-mechanical technologies.
Amedeo has prior large law firm experience. He is highly trained and experienced in the full spectrum of U.S. patent law, including preparation and prosecution of domestic patent applications; prosecuting U.S. National Stage applications under the Treaty of Paris and the PCT; patent litigation; post-grant proceedings, including Inter Partes Reviews, Covered Business Method Reviews, reexaminations, and reissues. In 2014, Martin and Ferraro ranked in the top 30 law firms in the country representing patent owners in the PTAB for inter partes reviews and covered business method patent reviews.
Amedeo works closely with our firm’s patent attorneys who are committee voting members in IP Practices in Japan, China, and the Far East (which includes Singapore, Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam) of the American Intellectual Property Law Association.

THOMAS H. MARTIN
Partner
Thomas (Tom) H. Martin is a founding partner of the firm and has more than twenty years of experience. He is particularly renowned for his abilities in mining new and valuable claims from existing patent disclosures in order to extract continuing value from an IP portfolio. Tom also has been the supervisory attorney for a multitude of post-grant review and reexamination proceedings.
Tom was one of the lead architects in preparing and prosecuting patents on behalf of Gary K. Michelson, MD, and Karlin Technology, Inc. in the field of spinal surgery. This portfolio of approximately 1,000 patents issued worldwide was subsequently acquired by Medtronic for $1.35 billion.

WESLEY C. MEINERDING
Partner
Wes Meinerding is a partner in Martin & Ferraro's Ohio office, focusing on drafting and prosecuting patents in mechanical, electrical, and software arts. Wes has nearly 15 years of experience assisting clients with the preparation and prosecution of U.S. and foreign patent applications. His experience ranges from representing large multi-national corporations to individual inventors. As part of this experience, Wes has prepared more than 150 utility patent applications and more than 100 design applications, and has prosecuted hundreds more.
In addition to his preparation and prosecution experience, Wes has devoted significant a amount of his practice to post-grant review and reexamination proceedings. As part of this experience, he has taken the lead in the preparation of materials for both offensive and defensive post-grant review proceedings. He also has significant experience in prosecuting reexamination proceedings, having been the responsible attorney for more than 20 reexaminations.
